On skipping a visit to the pump this weekend

Gas Prices.gif

Ah, how true it seems these days, doesn't it?

With Connecticut's average price of gas topping $4.32 a gallon this past Monday, it's been particularly pain-inducing lately to pull up to the gas station and fill 'er up. Ouch! So with the weather forecast calling for blue and sunny skies, this weekend is turning out to be an excellent time to take a staycation right here in Darien. Why drive up to the Cape, out to the Hamptons, or down to the Jersey Shore when we have so many fun activities going on in town over the next few days?!

The 3rd Annual Darien Days Carnival takes place at the Hindley School tonight and tomorrow night from 6pm-10pm, and again on Saturday from 4pm to 11pm.

Also on Friday evening, Darien Library kicks off its Summer Film Series with a 7:30pm showing of The Bucket List.

Friday and Saturday, it's the Darien Sidewalk Sale, with Family Fun Day events going on from 9am-5pm on both days.

This weekend also marks the first of three weekends in a row that the Darien Players will perform Cry Havoc at the DCA. Check out the full list of dates and times here.

For even more choices while planning your staycation, visit Connecticut's guide to Fairfield County and find information on local parks, beaches, water and land adventures, museums, historical attractions, arts centers, shopping, and dining.

And let the pump give us all a much-needed break.

Daily flag status alerts available online

Flag.bmp

2008 is shaping up to be quite a patriotic year for Americans; we'll be cheering on our nation's athletes in just a few weeks at the long-awaited summer Olympics, and in November, we'll turn out in droves to vote in a historic presidential election. Tomorrow, we'll all be celebrating our nation's 232nd birthday with barbecues, fireworks, family, friends, and lots of hope that with our vested and continued interests in protecting the environment, our country will be around for many, many more birthdays to come.

And with the American flag as the ultimate symbol of our country's existence, there's no better time than now to remind you that the State of Connecticut lists the status of both the national and state flags on its website. Click here and bookmark the page so that you can easily check whether the flags should be flown at full or half-staff.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

A Sweet Idea for Summer

Looking for some fun family activities to do this weekend that don't involve digging sand out of your bathing suit? Why not go strawberry picking? Connecticut Grown has just published its 2008 Pick Your Own Fruits & Vegetables guide (available at Darien Library), which provides a list of all of the farms in the state, as well as the items that are available at each one. In Fairfield County alone, there are 8 locations where you can reap the fruits of your labor (literally)! Some of the sweet treats you'll find include berries, pears, peaches, plums, rhubarb, asparagus, honey, fruit cobblers, and freshly baked pies. Yum!

And if you have taken to the organic and home-grown food movements, make sure to stop by the Darien Farmers' Market as well as the over 100 markets throughout Connecticut. Check out the Connecticut Department of Agriculture's website all summer long to find out what types of produce, meats, dairy, and specialty items are in season and which markets carry them. Then, take a look at the recipes offered on the site so you can plan out your farmers' market shopping list for the week.

Discuss the Allen-O'Neill redevelopment proposal online

On Thursday, the Darien Times reported that the Darien Housing Authority is currently drafting a proposal to redevelop the Allen-O'Neill Moderate Income Family Homes on Noroton Avenue, with the intention of maximizing the number of affordable housing units available on the property - an increase of approximately 80 to 100 units from the 53 that now stand.

Jenny Schwartz, chairman of the DHA, plans to set up a very open communication process to disseminate information out to the town about the redevelopment process, including making use of The Darien Times and local Channel 79. Currently, though, an online Yahoo Group is now available for you to leave comments or partake in a discussion. Please click here to join the online discussion group and voice your opinions and concerns.

Farmers Market returns to Darien

apples.jpg Peppers.jpg meat.jpg Bread.jpg

Summer hasn't officially begun until the Farmers Market has come back to Darien, with vendors bringing tons of fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and baked goods to us, giving us great excuses to eat healthily and try out new and refreshing recipes. It's a sweet start to the warmer weather, and luckily for us, summer will be arriving a month earlier than usual and staying through the holiday season.

This year, the market will begin on Wednesday, May 21st and will run each Wednesday through December from 11am to 6pm in its new location, the Howard Johnson hotel parking lot at 150 Ledge Road. It's a great way to support the local farmers of Connecticut, since all of the food that is available is produced in-state.

Something for the entire family

Within the past few months, I've have the fortunate opportunity to become more familiar with some of the non-profit organizations in town, and I have to say that I'm constantly blown away by all of the great things that are going on here.

A few weeks ago, I made a visit to Family Centers, which is located at 590 Post Road, in the building we typically associate with the Center for HOPE. It's a wonderfully warm space filled with materials that encourage hope, empowerment, and brighter futures - incredibly impressive in and of itself, I thought. Little did I know that Family Centers is not just a brilliant place to be, but also offers over thirty programs and services that are available to make all of our lives a little easier each day. WOW!

Just some of the programs for children and their families include Head Start, Homework Club, The Den for Grieving Kids, parenting workshops, and mental health and crisis counseling. Family Centers also offers senior health insurance counseling, friendly visitors and support groups, employment assistance, and housing resources, among others.

Perhaps there is a program available that could benefit you or someone you know. We could all use a little bit of help from time to time, right? Luckily, on Tuesday, March 25th, from 4 to 5 p.m., Gil Consolini, director of behavioral health at Family Centers, will be visiting Darien Library's Children's Room to discuss the programs and services available to Darien residents.

Why not stop by and find out about some of the great things going on in Darien? I hope to see you there!
