First Selectwoman's DRAFT List of Town Priorities
The following is a DRAFT list of First Selectwoman Klein's priorities for the upcoming year. The list will be discussed at tonight's Board of Selectmen meeting at 7 p.m. in room 206 of Town Hall. Click here to view the meeting agenda.
BOARD OF SELECTMEN PRIORITIES 2005-2006
PRIORITY: OPEN AND COMMUNITY SPACE
Strategies:
• Acquire property
• Fireworks – review DHS and other appropriate sites for 2006
• Improve maintenance of parks and beaches
• Ensure highest and best use of parks, beaches and facilities
• Support Weed Beach Master Plan
• Establish fee schedule for New Canaan’s use of our beaches
• Conduct assessment of public spaces and determine appropriate location for pool, recreational center and skate park
• Continue to improve the environment i.e. dredging, holding CDOT accountable for I 95 runoff
PRIORITY: EDUCATION
Strategies:
• Fund completion of DHS
• Fund Tokeneke School
PRIORITY: TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION
Strategies:
• Continue to address congestion issues with the Police Department and Police Commission on the Post Road and in Noroton Heights
• Implement proposals to realign parking on Heights Road
• Apply for grant to address Noroton Heights traffic congestion
• Replace street signs to conform to national requirements
• Implement Post Road traffic study with SWRPA
• Continue sidewalk improvement and pedestrian safety plan
• Address commuter parking shortage
• Continue to implement improvements at Noroton Heights Rail Station and Darien Station
PRIORITY: DOWNTOWN AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Strategies:
• Recommend a course of action for Heights Road flooding
• Improve signage
• Assist Heights Business district in forming a merchants association
• Support efforts of DRI
PRIORITY: SENIOR ISSUES
Strategies:
• Support raising the income level for tax relief
• Act on the recommendations of the Senior Center Task Force
• Address senior housing issues
• Investigate impacts of tax freeze for seniors on Town funding
• Consider lowering dump fees for seniors
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Strategies:
• Pursue grant opportunities to fund projects
• Renegotiate contracts
• Raise fees where applicable
• Continue to implement efficiencies in Town Hall
• Continue to realize alternative funding for projects
• Continue to build business base to relieve residential tax burden
CHARTER REVISION
Strategies:
• Establish need for commission
• Establish charge and commission
ONGOING GOVERNMENT CHARGES & RESPONSIBILITIES
SAFETY
• Implement practices that continue to keep the Darien Community safe
• Continue to recruit CERT Volunteers and emergency services volunteers
• Publish a readiness guide and distribute to community
• Update Emergency Management Plan
PROTECT COMMUNITY INTERESTS
• Broadwater LNG project
• CL&P Glenbrook Cables Project
• LICAP
• Regional transportation issues
• Participate in the Rest Stop Area Study
MAINTAIN THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
• Continue to implement the recommendations from efficiency study
• Continue monthly Department Head Project Progress Meetings
OPEN CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATION
• Cable access
• Continue to report to RTM members regularly with updates on projects, special meetings and invite them to participate in Board of Selectmen meetings as well as meetings that effect the Town or district
APPLY TOWN ORDINANCES FAIRLY AND CONSISTANTLY
• Update and improve ordinances so as to be enforceable
SUPPORT TOWN OF DARIEN VOLUNTEERS
• Recognize and provide support to volunteers
