How do we prevent teen drinking?
Yesterday, Bob Francis, the executive director of RYASAP in Bridgeport, addressed the annual meeting of the Darien United Way Human Service Planning Council. His speech focused on “asset-based surveys”. These surveys create a profile of teen behavior, attitudes, and perceptions, and determine what community resources help teens avoid risky behaviors. These resources are often referred to as “developmental assets”.
“Developmental assets” are “building blocks of healthy development”, according to the Search Institute. There are two types: external resources, such as family support, adult role models, and youth programs; and internal qualities such as achievement motivation, caring, and interpersonal competence. A complete list of 40 “Developmental Assets” is available on the Search Institute’s website.
There's been a lot of discussion lately about teen drinking. What do you think are some factors that encourage Darien teens’ healthy development and discourage teen drinking?

Will the new CT law that fines and/or jails parents who allow house parties curb drinking? Or will we have more teens drinking and driving?
