Last Night's BOS Meeting

Last night, room 206 in Town Hall was packed for the hour long debate on the replacement for Kevin Newman. Most of the discussion concerned the process to be followed. Could the two Republican Selectmen put forth a name, endorsed by the Republican Town Committee, for a vote tonight, or would the Democrats be able to interview Republican candidates? The seat belongs to a Republican. When the vote was finally taken for the candidate (Paul Hendrickson) proposed by the two Republican Selectmen, and endorsed by the Republican Town Committee, the vote was split, 2-2, and failed to carry for lack of a majority. Susan Young and Linda Santarella voting for, Barbara Thorne and Evonne Klein voting against.

The Board of Selectmen have until June 17 to reach an agreement on a replacement. If they do not by that time, Ch. 146 Sec. 9-222 of the CT General Statutes dictate that the decision will be made by the Tax Collector, (Bob Locke)Town Clerk, (Donna Rajczewski), and Town Treasurer (Joan Hendrickson). However, the Town Treasurer has recused herself from voting. An interview is being set up for the Board of Selectmen to interview Paul Hendrickson, the endorsed candidate, and possibly other interested Republicans. Information on the process to be followed will be posted on the Town website as soon as it is available.
