It's affordable housing....

I've attended almost all of Evonne Klein's First Selectwoman's Night Outs, since most of them have been held right here in the Library. Last night's Night Out was one of the liveliest. The audience of ten had affordable housing on its mind. There were questions about the relationship and responsibilities of the Darien Housing Authority (DHA) and the Darien Affordable Housing Advisory Commission (DAHAC). There were questions about the state regs relating to affordable housing. There were questions about Whole Foods and the Howard Johnson property. There were questions about the current library property. There were questions about accessory apartments. There were questions about Nearwater Manor. There were questions about the community planner position, and just to break up the thread, there were questions about speeding and traffic control.

I learned that there is a "point system" to reach the level of affordable housing required by the current state regulations in order to have a moratorium on affordable housing, and that Darien needs 128 points to reach that level. There are different point values assigned to housing for seniors and housing for families. DAHAC has been hard at work on many of these issues and will be making a presentation at the Republican Club on March 17. That promises to be a lively meeting as well, and several Democrats last night indicated that they were planning to attend. The Library has offered to host an information session for DAHAC as well. Look for this in the near future. Clearly this is an issue of major importance in Darien.
