A chance to help others

This week, the Library is holding its second "Food for Fines" event. The Library will waive overdue fines for patrons who bring in non-perishable food items for the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County. The Food Bank provides food to 115 charities and distribution sites serving people in need.

The Library will waive the first $10 of overdue fines for each box or can of food and $5 for each additional item. Please note that the Food Bank especially needs "Latchkey kid friendly" foods right now because they are preparing for increased need from families during the upcoming school vacation. Kid friendly foods include peanut butter, grape jelly, juices, breakfast cereal, mac and cheese, and canned pasta (ie Chef Boyardee).

For an interesting perspective on food insecurity in the U.S. read this article about the Governor of Oregon's attempt to live on $3 a day in grocery money.
