A Sweet Idea for Summer
Looking for some fun family activities to do this weekend that don't involve digging sand out of your bathing suit? Why not go strawberry picking? Connecticut Grown has just published its 2008 Pick Your Own Fruits & Vegetables guide (available at Darien Library), which provides a list of all of the farms in the state, as well as the items that are available at each one. In Fairfield County alone, there are 8 locations where you can reap the fruits of your labor (literally)! Some of the sweet treats you'll find include berries, pears, peaches, plums, rhubarb, asparagus, honey, fruit cobblers, and freshly baked pies. Yum!
And if you have taken to the organic and home-grown food movements, make sure to stop by the Darien Farmers' Market as well as the over 100 markets throughout Connecticut. Check out the Connecticut Department of Agriculture's website all summer long to find out what types of produce, meats, dairy, and specialty items are in season and which markets carry them. Then, take a look at the recipes offered on the site so you can plan out your farmers' market shopping list for the week.
