BoS votes in favor of purchasing library building
Last night, the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously in favor of purchasing the current Darien Library property at 35 Leroy Avenue. Discussion focused on the need to build affordable housing on the site.
Next steps in the process are review and voting by the Board of Finance and the Representative Town Meeting, and a mandatory referral to the Planning & Zoning Commission.
The Library owns the property and is selling it to offset some of cost of the project to build a New Darien Library at the corner of Post Road and Hecker Avenue. The remainder of the project cost will be met by private fundraising.

It's official-$3,750,000
That's the asking price for the current library building on 35 Leroy Avenue. Of course, we'd be happy if the market dictates an even higher price, since every dollar we get from the sale of the current library is a dollar less we have to raise in our Capital Campaign. There are no tax dollars being used to build the new library.
We have a list of 25 interested buyers, including the Town of Darien, and will put the property on the market sometime this spring. The Library trustees are very mindful of their fiduciary responsibility to get the best terms for the sale of our biggest asset.
Thanks, Ally Mookerjee, reporter for the Darien News Review, for a thorough article on the new library and the upcoming sale of the current building.

A stormy hearing
During last night's thunderstorm, the Darien Library presented its plans for a new library building on the Post Road to the Planning and Zoning Commission. As thunder crashed, Bruce Hill described the proposal, focusing on the new building's drainage system and parking arrangements. The project architect, Peter Gisolfi, presented the architectural plans.
Because the meeting ran until very late, P & Z did not discuss the application and will schedule another meeting to deliberate.
