Board of Finance votes on budget

Last night, the Board of Finance took a preliminary vote to reduce the Board of Education’s budget by $225,000. Before the successful 4-3 vote the Board unsuccessfully voted 3-4 to cut the budget by $250,000 and 3-4 to cut the budget by $200,000. Before the vote, there was considerable discussion about moving $60,000 of the Board of Education’s budget to a town contingency fund. Board of Education Vice Chair Kim Westcott spoke against the proposal and the BoF voted it down 4-3. The Board of Finance will cast its final vote on the budget this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Budget vote next week

The Board of Finance will take a preliminary vote on the Town Budget on Monday, April 9, 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. The final vote is scheduled for Thursday April 12, at 7:30 p.m.

At last night's meeting, the Board of Finance discussed a potential "cut list" with the Board of Selectmen. Most of the discussion concerned the new staff positions requested in the Selectmen's budget: a community planner, a park maintance position, and a driver/laborer in Public Works.

Why not join the "regulars" in the audience on Monday as this year's budget works its way through the Board of Finance review?

Next up is the RTM, which votes at its meeting on May 14.

It's Unanimous! Almost

This evening a large majority of RTM members approved the $92 million town budget for the upcoming year. One member voted against the budget and one abstained.

Earlier in the meeting, RTM's Finance & Budget and Education committees recommended that RTM unanimously approve the budget, which the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance had unanimously approved.

The deliberations livened up when the Planning, Zoning, & Housing Committee proposed an amendment putting a condition upon $200,000 for redevelopment of the Allen-O'Neill Homes. The committe proposed that the funding be contingent upon appointment of representatives from the Planning, Zoning, & Housing Committee and the Finance & Budget Committee to the Housing Authority's building committee. After twenty minutes of debate, RTM approved the amendment 50 to 18 with one abstention and went on to give their final approval to the entire budget as amended.

In a brief meeting last night, the Board of Finance voted unanimously to approve the town budget and to set the mill rate at 13.4, a 2.92% increase over last year's rate. This is a smaller increase than in the past several years, which have seen an average mill rate increase of 6%, according to BOF Chairman Peter Hovell.
