Road Closures on Rt. 1 at the Railroad Bridge

Connecticut Department of Transportation officials have announced that there will be nightly road closures on Route 1 in Darien, under the Metro-North Railroad Bridge, between West Avenue and Tokeneke Road for demolition of a portion of the existing railroad bridge.

• Beginning Monday, July 31 through Friday night, August 4
The roadway will be closed from 11:00PM to 5:00AM each night that the work is scheduled, in order to remove the existing bridge steel for Track 3. Drivers will need to follow the posted detour signs during this time.
• Westbound Route 1 traffic will turn right onto Sedgewick Avenue and then left on
Leroy Avenue to return to Route 1.
• Eastbound Route 1 traffic will turn left onto Leroy Avenue and then right onto Sedgewick Avenue to return to Route 1.

Please allow for extra time to reach the train station and board your train. The
Connecticut Department of Transportation understands the inconvenience of these
closures and will complete this work as quickly as possible. Your patience and
cooperation are greatly appreciated.

During this time, local traffic will be permitted to access the railroad facilities and
residences, but no traffic will be allowed to pass below the bridge. Traffic control
personnel will be on site directing motorists and pedestrians during the construction
operations. Pedestrian traffic below the bridge will also be obstructed.
This work is part of an ongoing project to replace bridges and catenary on the
Metro-North New Haven Line between South Norwalk and Stamford.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation appreciates your patience as
improvements and upgrades occur on the New Haven Rail Line. These projects support
the State’s continued effort to meet future needs on your public transportation system.
Thank you for your patience.

CT RAIL COMMUTER COUNCIL TO HOLD “MEET THE COMMUTER / RAILROAD” DAY

Wed. June 28th - Greenwich RR Station

(Stamford CT - June 20, 2006): In an effort to improve communication between commuters and Metro-North, The CT Rail Commuter Council is holding its next “Meet The Railroad / Meet The Commuter” day, Wednesday June 28th - 6 to 10 am at the Greenwich Railroad Station.

A volunteer group of commuters, appointed by the CT legislature, the members of the CT Rail Commuter Council act as advocates for their fellow riders in monthly meetings with Metro-North and CT Dept of Transportation. Most Council meetings are held in the evenings at various stations served by the railroad.

“Often that’s an inconvenient time for commuters to attend,” says Jim Cameron, Chairman of the group. “So we decided to bring the representatives of the railroad to the commuters. That way they’ll be able to get their questions answered right away. And the folks that run the railroad can hear what’s on the minds of their customers.”

In addition to representatives of Metro-North, CT Dept of Transportation, the CT Rail Commuter Council, staffers from other stakeholders in the transportation debate will be in attendance to consult with commuters on transportation alternatives.

The “Meet The Commuter” event will take place on the platforms and in the waiting room where commuters can informally meet face to face with railroad officials to discuss train service.

Impact of Possible Transit Strike on Metro-North Commuters

If there is a transit strike at midnight Thursday, service on Metro-North in Connecticut should not be affected.

Metro-North has assured the Commuter Council that service on the New Haven line will be “normal”, though we would anticipate crowding due to increased ridership.

The railroad will be running additional in-city shuttle trains, stopping in the Bronx, but the cars for these trains will probably not come from New Haven trains. In-city stations on the New Haven line will be served by Harlem line trains.

Union officials from Metro-North have told the Council their workers will come to work, even if there are sympathy picket lines.

There will be a new, temporary station erected at Yankee Stadium to offer park and ride service, as all private cars into Manhattan south of 96th street will be required to have four passengers.

If you are looking for car-pool alternatives, check out Nu-Ride www.nuride.com or MetroPool www.metropool.com . For updates on service, see www.mta.info and click on “service advisory”.

The Council will keep you updated as event warrant. Please forward this information to your friends and colleagues. They can join this e-mail alert list at http://www.trainweb.org/ct/join.htm

Thanks for your continued support!
